Cloth hardcover, xi + 369 pages, index, NOT ex-library. Text pages in excellent condition, appear unread: clean, bright, untanned, with unmarked text and firm binding. Cosmetic manufacturing faults: an 1-inch incision in the gutter of front board (not affecting the binding); a small loss at the side edge of rear endpaper (the missing bit is stuck inside the rear board). Boards show small age-spots to edges and a touch of fraying. Dust jacket with a few small edge-nicks, minor creasing and bit of rubbing to edges. -- This book offers a comprehensive review of the modern theory of control systems described by functional-differential equations. The emphasis of the text is on methods and results that are applicable to analysis and synthesis of industrial control systems with time delays. Initial chapters contain examples of systems with delays and a presentation of typical control problems. Chapters also present basic results of the mathematical theory of functional-differential and discrete equations and cover identification of time-delay systems, stability theory, PID and Smith controllers, as well as the determination of stability regions, controller settings, and more. A review of controllability and observability results is presented, and optimal control is discussed in detail. -- Contents: Preface; Part I. Introduction 1 Examples of Systems with Time Delays [Systems with Lumped Delays; Systems with Distributed Delays] 2 Formulation of Control Problems [Model Construction; Stability and Level Stabilization; Terminal Control; Tracking Problems; Optimal Control; Existence of Solutions to Control Problems; Feedback Regulator and Connected Problems; Analysis and Synthesis of Control Systems]; Part II. Models of time-delay systems 3 Models of Continuous Time-delay Systems [Functional-differential Equations; Linear Continuous-time FDE; Input, Output, State and Transfer Functions] 4 Models of Discrete Time-delay Systems [Discrete-time Equations; Linear Discrete Models; State and Output Equations - Transfer Functions; Approximation of Continuous-time Systems by Discrete-time Systems] 5 Identification of Linear Systems [Problem Statement; Mathematical Methods in Identification Problems; Some Particular Identification Problems and Methods]; Part III. Control problems 6 Stability [Lyapunov's Second Method for FDE in the Space C; Stability Theory of Abstract Linear Systems and its Applications to Systems Involving Delav; Stability of Linear Systems with Nonlinear Perturbations (Lyapunov's First Method); Criteria for the Location of Characteristic Function Zeros in Left Complex Half-plane] 7 Conventional Regulation Problems [Stability Region of a Continuous-time Conventional Regulation System; Parametric Synthesis of Continuous Regulators; Smith-type Regulation Systems] 8 Controllability, Observability and Related Problems for Linear Systems [Definitions of Basic Notions; RP-controllability of Linear FDE Systems; Null-state Controllability of FDE Systems; Controllability, Observability and Pole Assignment] 9 Optimal Control for Continuous-time Systems [Formulation of Optimal Control Problem; Necessary Conditions of Optimality; Some Particular Optimization Problems] 10 Linear-quadratic Problem of Optimal Control [Problem Formulation; Equivalent Linear-quadratic Problems; Step Method; Finite-time Problem with Arbitrary Delays; Infinite-time Problem with Arbitrary Delays; Discrete Approximation of the Linear-quadratic Problem with Finite Control Time]; References; Index.…
