Print on Demand. This captivating narrative offers a striking and insightful glimpse into the society, culture, and dramatic personal experiences of 17th century Turkic and Persian people, as seen through the eyes of William Hobbes, an English sailor who becomes enslaved for a time by Ottoman slave traders. The author’s deep knowledge of the turbulent era of Ottoman expansion in the Levant, and his lived experience among the people of the time, offers an intensely immersive and historically rich description of daily life under Ottoman rule. His descriptions of the regions, customs, and the people he encounters along the way bring a lost world to life with a vibrant immediacy and startling clarity. Within this historical context, Hobbes weaves a gripping tale of adventure and hardship, freedom and captivity, and the complexities of human nature in the face of adversity. The book provides a unique window into the complexities of Ottoman life and society at a time when the empire was at its peak and is a valuable read for anyone interested in the history of the region or the human experience in extremis. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

My father early in life married Anne, the daughter of his neighbour Isaac Crooks, cordwainer, who was specially skilful In making boots suitable for mariners, and for which he had a great reputation. They had four daughters and three sons, besides the writer of this narrative.
I was born in the year 1700, and was the youngest of the family. My father's substance having greatly increased as years had rolled on, I enjoyed a some what better education than my brothers; which has enabled me to attain the high position which I now occupy. My name, William, had been given me by my sponsor, William Shaw, a master mariner, who commanded a vessel engaged in the Smyrna trade. From his discourse when, in the intervals between his voyages, he at times partook of supper, and perchance' enjoyed a pipe of Virginia, in the living-room behind the shop, where many sea-faring men were wont to resort, my first ideas of becoming a sailor were derived.
