This book is one half of a two volume set. Volume 1: The Union is 201 pages long, containing over 100 full color pictures of the Federal army's fighting units and battle scenes. Included are the famous Irish Brigade, Iron Brigade, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Colored Troops, numerous Zouave units plus many more. The author has combined a lifelong love of Civil War history with his hobby of painting and crafting 15-22 mm miniatures in scale scenarios. The miniature uniform features, equipment, unit badges and flags are detailed and accurate. The soldiers and sailors are depicted in realistic scale dioramas in camp, in the heat of battle or fighting aboard ironclad vessels replete with explosions, gun smoke, blood and casualties. In addition to the full length text descriptions of the soldiers and the famous Civil War battles, there are included more than 80 items of esoteric trivia relating to the Union Army and "Billy Yank". Also featured are a glossary of related terms, miscellany and quizzes. (See also Vol.2 The Confederacy).

About the Author
The author is a physician (diagnostic radiologist) in a busy partnership in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attributes his lifelong interest in America's Civil War to stories he heard regarding ancestors who fought on both sides of the bloody conflict. The fascinating battle lore he has been exposed to on numerous trips to Civil War parks and battlefields stimulated his desire to portray the gritty reality of the war in more than words alone. His hobby of painting miniature soldiers and creating scale dioramas provides the perfect means to depict the carnage, smoke and confusion of battle to enhance the message of the historical text.
