About this Item
Octavo, 331pp. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, with the corners gently bumped. In a near fine dust jacket, bright and clean, with some scuffs to the top of the front panel and a few nicks to the extremities. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Mitford on the front free endpaper: "To Betty Boyd, with best wishes, Jessica Mitford." Boyd could be the silent film actress of that name, who lived in California, as did Mitford, but we have no way of knowing. Uncommon signed, this expose of the American funeral business was a major hit, discussing the myriad ways in which funeral directors, casket manufacturers, and all kinds of related businesses take advantage of the bereaved. Jessica Mitford, a journalist and activist, was the most radical of the Mitford sisters, and wrote a number of similar exposes, as well as memoirs of her very interesting family (her sister Nancy was a successful novelist, and two of her estranged sisters, Unity and Diana, were great fans of--and good friends with--Hitler).
