From the Publisher
Selections from Louisa May Alcott's LITTLE WOMEN have been added, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" has been added in its entirety.
Twentieth-century literary history has been further augmented by selections from Zora Neale Hurston's THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD, and from the work of Cathy Song.
Period introductions, headnotes, footnotes, and bibliographies have been extensively rewritten and updated to meet the needs of students and scholars in the twenty-first century. The presentation of the selections has been revised to clarify the rich connections between the literature and its social and historical contexts.
A convenient new Instructor's Resource Guide will provide creative suggestions for teaching, questions for discussion, a variety of writing assignments, film and video suugestions, and tips on using the World Wide Web.
The colored plates introduced in the eighth edition have been augmented with black and white reproductions interspersed throughout the anthology.
Literary merit remains the criterion by which readings are selected.
A flexible organization, with Walt Whitman fully represented in both Volume I and Volume II, allows instructors to tailor the material to the design of their courses.
Period and author introductions make students aware of the connections between literature and social and intellectual history, and between literature and biography.
Numerous annotations accompany the selections to facilitate understanding, but interpretive footnotes are avoided, ensuring an unbiased presentation that gives students the freedom to develop their own critical perspectives.
A full-color art portfolio in each volume enriches students' understanding of the literature and the culture in which it was produced.
