Print on Demand. This book chronicles a notable 19th-century American miscarriage of justice, beginning with the trial of Arrison for the murder of Isaac Allison. Arrison, a medical student, had a falling out with Allison and was heard threatening his life before constructing an infernal machine that he sent to Allison. Allison's wife opened the package, resulting in a fatal explosion. Despite initially evading capture, Arrison was eventually tracked down. On appeal, his conviction was overturned due to technicalities, but he was retried and sentenced to ten years in prison. The author explores the case within the context of other 19th-century trials, highlighting evolving legal perspectives on intent and insanity. Through this infamous crime, the book delves into themes of premeditation, guilt, and the complexities of the justice system, offering insights into the challenges of ensuring both justice and fairness in criminal proceedings. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Unlike the case of Mrs. Cunningham (p. The guilt of Ann If. Simpson (p. 369) seems very clear. But in the last half century has a Southern or Western jury ever sent to the gallows a young and beautiful white woman, even though she has poisoned her hus band for the sake of a younger lover? The prosecuting attorney of a great Western city declared not long ago that he had given up the struggle, until the day when female jurors would mete out justice without dis tinction of sex.
