A revised and enlarged edition of Noah Webster's pioneering American dictionary, with a pictorial catalogue of all engravings used in the text. Revised and enlarged by American clergymen, academics and lexicographers Chauncey A. Goodrich and Noah Porter. In a contemporary rebacked full embossed calf binding, with marbled endpapers. Original back strip laid down. Engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved title page and numerous vignettes. Pages 1697-1768 comprise 'A Classified Selection of Pictorial Illustrations for Webster's Unabridged Dictionary', serving as a pictorial reference for all engravings used in the text throughout. Accompanying the dictionary itself is a brief history of the English language, principles of pronounciation, etymological vocabulary of modern geographical names, quotations, abbreviations, and an index to the pictorial illustrations, divided into categories such as architecture, geology, religion, paleontology, musical instruments and more. First published in 1828, Noah Webster's famous dictionary helped establish a unique national identity for the United States through standardised spelling, regional American terminology and distinct pronounciation rules. In a contemporary rebacked full embossed calf binding, with marbled endpapers. Externally, with crackling and rubbing to the spine, and rubbing to the extremities. Hinges reinforced with cloth, with front hinge starting, but firm. All but the final raised band lifted. Marks to the boards. Bookplate of one Alexander Stewart to the front paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound, with pp. xiii detached but present. Front free endpaper-p. iv tender but holding, with crack to the gutter between p. iv-v. Pages are marginally toned, but generally clean, with the odd spots. Contemporary ink inscription to the head of the title page. Lower outer corner of title page clipped. Wear to the margins of the front free endpaper and p. xiii. Good Only.…
