Robert J. Dixon's popular 1953 set of American Classics, Graded Readers, consisting of ten literary classics "simplified and adapted for greater reading pleasure." Each volume includes study exercises and a vocabulary list. The complete series includes abridged versions of Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables, Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Edgar Allen Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Gold Bug, James Fenimore Cooper's The Pathfinder, or The Inland Sea, Bret Harte's The Outcasts of Poker Flat, Edward Eggleston's The Hoosier Schoolmaster, Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady, William Dean Howells' The Rise of Silas Lapham, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage. Volumes are faded and dust stained from age. The spines are well sunned. Some occasional staining to a few volumes and typical shelf wear all around. An acceptable complete set.
