Add to basketAn important and valuable collection of 17 pamphlets on US slavery (from an abolitionist perspective) and on other Civil War and political matters, dated 1863-1864, all bound together in old half morocco, marbled sides titled gilt on the spine and with an old library number deriving from Manchester Public Free Libraries, whose armorial bookplate together with an identification label is on the front end paper; the opening recto carries a partially completed accession slip for the Reference Library of the Manchester Central Library, the last date shown as 18 Jul 1978; on a later free end paper there's a manuscript note "Presented to the Workingmen's Reform Club by J [or F] Milnes Edge Manchester January 18th 1867"; the binding is inevitably somewhat rubbed on the corners, edges and the outer hinges and is slightly cracked on the first inner joint but the volume as a whole is sound and firm; internal condition is good or better, albeit with a little browning of the paper, with the exception that the front and back wrappers of one pamphlet are acid browned with age and consequently fragile and with small tears although complete (see later); there are a very neat few library stamps or blind embossing of the circular library seal; 152 x 230mm; where original wrappers are called for nearly all are present . . . . . . . . . 11 of the pamphlets are published by the Loyal Publication Society, New York, 1864, (hereafter LPS, and titles listed toward the end of this catalogue entry) and in other instances details are given following with authors, titles and other relevant information. . . . . . .
