This eye-catching pictorial map of the United States was designed, copywritten, and published by Ernest Dudley Chase in 1940. It is the first edition of an updated take on an earlier map, The United States of America (1935). A lavish color example was published in 1941, followed by numerous licensed versions, puzzles, and more. Dozens of vignettes covering nearly every part of the image highlight the architectural grandeur, historic sites, natural features, and major industries across America - all illustrated in Chase's iconic pictorial style. Further scenes around the 'border'(actually occupying most of Canada and Mexico) highlight other recognizable locations across the U.S., from the Mission Dolores in San Diego to Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Chase gives ample credit to Mother Nature, with views of the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Old Faithful, and Yosemite Falls occupying each corner. America the Wonderland is certainly a fitting title for such a celebratory composition, issued shortly before America's entry into World War II (note the omissions of Alaska and Hawaii, not yet states). Ernest Dudley Chase (1878-1966) was born in Boston and began his career crafting greeting cards before finding his artistic niche in the 1930s with intricately detailed pictorial maps. Self-published from his home studio, Chase s maps, exceeding 50 in total, captured diverse locations and themes, ranging from historical events to technological advancements. He meticulously hand-drawn each scene, imbuing his maps with a unique blend of scholarly detail, wit, and patriotism. Though commercially successful in their time, Chase s maps are now prized by collectors and scholars for their distinctive style and whimsical take on cartography.
