Synopsis:

There are extremely successful businessmen whose professional trajectories continue their upward climb with just one or two minor stumbles. Only a few overcome a more significant crisis and continue forward. Others go bankrupt for many different reasons: new technologies, bad decisions or the crash of financial markets, and they do not or cannot get a second chance. However, there were five occasions on which this Italian immigrant saw everything (or almost everything) he had built evaporate, and five times that he picked himself up again by dint of hard work, business acumen, innovation and personal integrity.

Even after his death, the Cuban government has continued to slander his memory in various ways. Perhaps it is a vain attempt to wrest from him what they never could while he was alive: his honor.

About the Author: Juan Antonio Blanco Gil. Historian and political analyst. He was a university philosophy professor, a foreign policy analyst, and a diplomat for the Cuban government at the United Nations. In 1992 he resigned from his governmental positions and founded the Félix Varela Center in Cuba, an institution exclusively funded by international NGOs from the OXFAM family that he directed until moving to Ottawa in 1997. In Canada he was the global coordinator of the World Human Rights Conference Vienna plus Five in 1998 and then later elected Executive Director of Human Rights Internet. He is also a consultant since 2004 to regional networks of Latin American and Caribbean Afro-descendants. He was Visiting Associate Director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University. He is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives at Miami Dade College. Blanco has given numerous conferences in universities and think tanks such as the Council of Foreign Relations and has published articles and essays in several specialized journals in the Americas and Europe. He is author of several books.
