Born to an imprisoned teenager, Vickie lived a good life with her adoptive mother who loved her unconditionally, but whose staunch traditional beliefs about not talking to children about certain realities of life left Vickie vulnerable to boys who knew what to do with a child in a woman's body. Years before she could drive, drink, or vote, Vickie was raising a son and trying to figure out how to break the curse of incarceration and secure a future for her family. About the Author: Dr. Jessica Wallace McBride is a professional educator whose experience ranges from elementary to post-secondary. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University. While teaching elementary school, she earned a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Florida A&M University, and went on to earn a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the same institution. She has been recognized many times for excellence in the field of education. Dr. McBride is the co-founder and Board Chairperson of the Imani Dance Program for Youth Development, a nonprofit organization that teaches cultural self-esteem through the performing arts to deter adolescents from crime and early parenthood. She is also a graduate of Leadership Tallahassee Class 27, and the co-author of the children’s book, "Oliver Vance, Pull Up Your Pants!" In her spare time, Dr. McBride enjoys reading, gardening, baking gourmet cheesecakes, and learning to sew.
