Add to basketA fascinating and unique collection of ephemera from the nineteenth century, with sketches, hand-written poetry and more. From the library of noted art historian, Patricia Milne Henderson. With a letter loosely inserted addressed to this album"s most recent owner, Patricia Milne-Henderson dated 02/11/62 from one of the Freemantles of Bayford House near Hertfordshire. The letter is an invite for lunch. Patricia Milne-Henderson is an esteemed art historican and collector. She had a large numismatic collection and works pertaining to woodcuts. This scrapbook contains at least two different hands. Several of the items loosely inserted have the name "Miss Shields" written to rear of them in a contemporary copperplate hand. The original owner of this album has copied out many hymns and devotional poems such as: "Dependence on God: Even as the needle, that directs the hour" "Abide With me! Feast Falls the Eventide" With hand written excerpts from Samuel Johnson"s "The Rambler", Thomas Campbell"s "The Pleasure of Hope". Drawings include: A hand-coloured blue butterfly, initialled "M H Amiens 1829" on the Whatman 1825 Paper Pencil drawings of British ships at sea pursued by a second ship bearing the Jolly Roger on brown cartridge paper. An oil pastel drawing of a gentleman in a suit of armour being tended to by two children who are assisting him dress on brown paper. Pastoral scenes, initialled M C H 1828 on Whatman Paper. Drawings of Loch Katrine dated 1850 and of Tweed which are undated. The drawings of Tweed are similar to that of a boat which is initialled "H M S" this may be the hand of "Miss Shields". An ink drawing of "Thurston Hall" dated 1826. A humorous caricature of an individual with the caption "I hope I don"t intrude". Uncommon poems include "Ode to the Violets" which begins "Hail! Beauteous daughter." and an "Address to the Comet of 1853". This poem describes one of the many comets in 1853 and begins "Mysterious Visitant! Thy light hath faded flown our skies". The contemporary morocco binding has "1826" to the date, although much of the contents dates from 1826 to 1860. The paper is watermarked 1825. There are also two silhouettes, one male one female loosely inserted with the white paper has been painted black. Other items loosely inserted include the printed eulogy of one Dr Gilly and Samuel Johnson loosely inserted and a print of "The Cross Leighton Buzzard" dated by hand 1852. A truly unique collection of ephemera from the nineteenth century. In a full morocco binding. Externally, rubbed to the spine and to the head and tail of spine. Rear hinge has failed. The front weak is tender and may detach unless carefully handled. Internally, the text block is firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with occasional scattered spots. Good.
