About the book >.>.> CRITICISM makes more and more play with the idea Chat that a man's art can be accounted for by the various influences" to which he is subject. The detection and classification of these influences tends to be one of the chief tasks of the critic: who is apt to forget that the great men rather impose than submit to influences, and that there are even lesser men who make much more than they take the colour of their surroundings. Among the latter is Albert Rutherston: it would be a mistake to look for him among the chameleons. There was never an artist who, for all his sympathy and sociability, more eschewed dogmas, creeds, schools and shibboleths. Starting along a line parallel with that of his brother William he has long since struck a solitary furrow which has landed the two brothers poles apart: and he has realised a strangely individual vision which, before he was thirty, he found nowhere but in himself. Since his student days he has worked often with others: but never in any but exactly his.
