Add to basket"THE REAL STUFF BY A REAL ALASKAN" - Front cover quote: "SOMEBODY HAD TO WRITE A GOOD SOURDOUGH COOKBOOK." Back cover text reads: "Descendants of the 'Mayflower' have nothing on the proud lineage of many a sourdough starter.' And she knows whereof she speaks, for Mrs. Allman is an expert chef and curator of The House of Wickersham in Juneau where a specialty is 'flaming sourdough.' There are folks in Alaska who claim the stuff of life, in their sourdough, pot is more than 40 years old or date it to the time when Fairbanks was a mining town. ALASKA SOURDOUGH--handwritten to match the old-timer recipes--includes directions for several starters that can ripen in varying times: 3 days to 1 year. And once the pot is bubblin', there's no end to the fun and flavor. More than 95 recipes--hotcakes to doughnuts and many delicious accompaniments--scads of time-tested advice for the novice and plenty of lore for sourdough fans are in this witty and useful last word on sourdough cookery. Author Ruth Allman and her husband Jack, an Eskimauan-Isle in 1950 becoming firsts-50 miles northwest of Juneau, was home for the Allmans during the 5-year period they were starting Tongass Lodge on Deer in 1939 in herring and fishermen. It was during this period that Ruth developed many of her sourdough recipes because 'we lived out of the sourdough pot 365 days a year, the entire population--and I had to use my imagination or we'd have eaten the same thing all of the time.'".
