Non‑formal education included Catholic catechism at Nyang’oma and Lwak, instilling moral discipline and community belonging. Later, NYS training at Gilgil emphasized Kiswahili, discipline, and civic responsibility. Secondary schooling at Nyang’oma Boys (Kambi I) was marked by strikes, teacher shortages, and survival strategies such as selective uniform washing. At Amukura High, A‑Level education symbolized prestige and mobility, though challenges like sabotaged chemistry practicals exposed systemic gaps.
Early professional life at Kawere Secondary involved teaching sciences, preparing schemes of work, and participating in joint exam marking. Family and community events punctuated this trajectory, reinforcing education as collective.
Anthropological significance: Education was embedded in kinship, oral traditions, and resilience. Sociological significance: The narrative critiques systemic inequalities and highlights collective responsibility. Ethnographic significance: Vivid accounts of chores, food, and survival strategies illustrate lived realities. Educational significance: Formal schooling was sustained by informal and non‑formal learning, showing education as integrated and collective.
The manuscript situates African education as an integrated system shaped by survival, improvisation, and community. Early life in Yimbo Kadimo was defined by malaria exposure, oral traditions, and large family networks. Informal schooling began by following siblings, peeping into classrooms, and improvising with rudimentary materials. Formal enrollment in 1973 marked the start of structured learning, but informal exposure remained vital.
Catechism provided non‑formal religious instruction, instilling discipline and moral identity. Kiswahili acquisition was informal, absorbed from matatus and radio, later reinforced in NYS training. Secondary schooling at Nyang’oma Boys was precarious, with strikes demanding teachers and survival strategies to cope with inspections. Extracurriculars offered cultural expression, while chemistry instruction remained weak until later interventions.
At Amukura High, A‑Level education symbolized prestige, with degrees equated to wealth. Form 6 leavers were revered, often serving as untrained teachers. The author excelled in science congress competitions despite challenges in practical exams. Early professional life at Kawere Secondary involved teaching sciences, preparing schemes of work, and participating in exam marking, before transitioning to NYS Gilgil in 1987.
Anthropological lens: Education was embedded in kinship, oral traditions, and resilience. Sociological lens: The text critiques systemic inequalities, highlighting collective responsibility and prestige of degrees. Ethnographic lens: Vivid accounts of chores, food, and survival strategies illustrate lived realities. Educational lens: Formal schooling was sustained by informal and non‑formal learning, showing education as integrated and collective.
