This contains the report by Monson, Assistant Secretary in Nairobi, with a brief covering letter by Sir Charles Eliot, Commissioner, Commander-in-Chief and Consul-General for the East Africa Protectorate, addressed to the Marquess of Lansdowne (Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice), the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Noting the geographical and ethnic diversity of BEA including Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast, Monson describes the present state of slavery, the relative treatment of household, agricultural, and other slaves, the dangers of recapture etc. He also addresses how the construction of the Uganda Railway and the arrival of settlers are encouraging people away from slavery and into voluntary paid labour. For different tribal groups he looks into the characteristics of labour, their work ethic, related supervision issues, skills and potential, wages and preferred means of payment, possible areas of work, labour retention, etc. Seller Inventory # 5232
