Paperback. Most aerospace courses teach aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, and orbital mechanics as separate subjects - and leave students to connect them alone. If you have worked through separate courses in fluid mechanics, propulsion, and astrodynamics, you have probably noticed the seams. One text treats wings in depth but skips rockets; another derives orbital transfers but assumes you already understand compressible flow; a third covers structures as an afterthought. The result is a set of methods that never quite fits together - and a nagging sense that the same physics keeps reappearing under different names. This textbook was built to close those gaps. It presents aerospace engineering as one connected discipline, building from the atmosphere upward: the physical environment first, then the fluid mechanics that turn atmospheric properties into forces, then the propulsion that generates thrust, the structures that carry loads, and the spacecraft systems that operate where the atmosphere ends.Inside, you will: - Follow every major result from first principles, with each derivation shown step by step. - See the recurring logic across topics - why a rocket nozzle and a subsonic diffuser obey the same area-velocity relation. - Work through fully solved examples with units tracked at every stage. - Test yourself with end-of-chapter practice problems, each supported by complete answers. - Move confidently between SI and US customary units, both given where practice expects them. - Use appendices of constants, atmosphere tables, airfoil data, and material properties as a standing reference.Coverage spans the standard atmosphere and flight regimes; fluid mechanics and subsonic, finite-wing, and compressible aerodynamics; aircraft performance, stability, and control; air-breathing and rocket propulsion; aerospace structures and structural design; aircraft sizing; two-body orbital mechanics; orbital maneuvers and mission design; spacecraft systems; and re-entry and hypersonic flight. It is written for upper-division undergraduates in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering students taking aerospace options, and early-career engineers who want a single quantitative reference from atmospheric flight through orbital operations. A background in calculus through ordinary differential equations, physics, statics, and introductory thermodynamics is assumed.Bring the whole discipline together in one volume. Add this comprehensive guide to your shelf and start building a connected understanding of flight, from the runway to orbit. This item is printed on demand. If you have worked through separate courses in fluid mechanics, propulsion, and astrodynamics, you have probably noticed the seams. One text treats wings in depth but skips rockets; another derives orbital transfers but assumes you already understand compressible flow; a third covers structures as an afterthought. The result is a set of methods that never quite fits together — and a nagging sense that the same physics keeps reappearing under different names.
This textbook was built to close those gaps. It presents aerospace engineering as one connected discipline, building from the atmosphere upward: the physical environment first, then the fluid mechanics that turn atmospheric properties into forces, then the propulsion that generates thrust, the structures that carry loads, and the spacecraft systems that operate where the atmosphere ends.
Inside, you will: • Follow every major result from first principles, with each derivation shown step by step. • See the recurring logic across topics — why a rocket nozzle and a subsonic diffuser obey the same area–velocity relation. • Work through fully solved examples with units tracked at every stage. • Test yourself with end-of-chapter practice problems, each supported by complete answers. • Move confidently between SI and US customary units, both given where practice expects them. • Use appendices of constants, atmosphere tables, airfoil data, and material properties as a standing reference.
Coverage spans the standard atmosphere and flight regimes; fluid mechanics and subsonic, finite-wing, and compressible aerodynamics; aircraft performance, stability, and control; air-breathing and rocket propulsion; aerospace structures and structural design; aircraft sizing; two-body orbital mechanics; orbital maneuvers and mission design; spacecraft systems; and re-entry and hypersonic flight.
It is written for upper-division undergraduates in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering students taking aerospace options, and early-career engineers who want a single quantitative reference from atmospheric flight through orbital operations. A background in calculus through ordinary differential equations, physics, statics, and introductory thermodynamics is assumed.
