This book comprises select proceedings of the 3rd International conference on Advances in Materials and Manufacturing Technology (ICAMMT-2024). Functional materials, smart materials, and intelligent materials stand as foundational elements in twenty-first-century technology, irrespective of their designation. The evolution of modern structural materials reflects an unprecedented trajectory of scientific and technological progress. The book discusses the latest materials, manufacturing processes, evaluation of materials properties for the application in automotive, aerospace, marine, locomotive, and energy sectors. The topics covered include advanced metal forming, bending, welding and casting techniques, recycling and re-manufacturing of materials and components, materials processing, characterization and applications, multi-physics coupling simulation, and optimization, alternate materials /material substitution, thermally-enhanced processes, and materials, composites and polymer manufacturing, the fabrication process of nanomaterial, powder metallurgy and ceramic forming, numerical modelling and simulation, advanced machining processes, functionally graded materials, non-destructive examination, optimization techniques, engineering materials, heat treatment, material testing, MEMS integration, energy materials, bio-materials, metamaterials, metallography, nanomaterial, SMART materials, application of AI and ML in advanced materials, automation, and superalloys. In addition, it discusses industrial applications and cover theoretical and analytical methods, numerical simulations and experimental techniques in the area of advanced materials and their applications. The recognition of benefits restricting from advanced materials and structures transcends various applications. Smart systems offer a streamlined approach to controlling material and system characteristics by autonomously adapting to environmental changes. Mechanistic comprehension across disciplines is paramount for developing materials with capabilities that surpass current standards. Our conference serves as a cross-disciplinary summit, transcending organizational and global barriers to integrate research and education in the vital field of advanced materials. We focus on major sectors including advanced processing, material characterization, modelling and simulation, properties, performance, and device fabrication, aiming to overlay the way for the next wave of scientific and technological advancements.
Dr. Ramesh Kumar Nayak is an associate professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, MP, India. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2016, M Tech. degree in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering in 2005, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering degree (4 years) in 2002. He has more than 19 years of teaching, research, and industries experience in Manufacturing and Materials Engineering, with special emphasis in metal casting and FRP composites. He has received several scientific awards and honours. He has worked as examiner of Ph.D. thesis for many universities in different countries. He has also published as editor and author more than 3 books 10 book chapters and 70 articles in journals and conferences (more than 50 articles in journals indexed in Web of Science core collection/h-index 21+/1600+ citations, SCOPUS/h-index 18+/1150+ citations, Google Scholar/h-index 21+/1600+ citations).
Dr. Rajiv Shekhar is a professor in Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. He received his Ph.D. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1988 (University of California, Berkeley), M.Tech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1988 (University of California, Berkeley) in 1985, Metallurgical Engineering degree (4 years) in 1982 (IIT Kanpur). He has more than 30 years of teaching, research and administrative experience. He was a director (3/2018 – 6/2023), Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad: Completely revamped the (i) academic curriculum, (ii) research focus and infrastructure, (iii)academic and administrative governance systems, and (iv) sports and student governance system of ISM Dhanbad in line with older IITs. His research is included and not limited to application of transport phenomena and electrochemistry for process/reactor design in extractive metallurgy, manufacturing, pollution control, and solar thermal power using experiments and CFD-based mathematical modelling.
Prof. J. Paulo Davim is a full professor at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He is also distinguished as an honorary professor in several universities/colleges/institutes in China, India, and Spain. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1997, M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering (materials and manufacturing processes) in 1991, Mechanical Engineering degree (5 years) in 1986, from the University of Porto (FEUP), the Aggregate title (Full Habilitation) from the University of Coimbra in 2005, and the D.Sc. (Higher Doctorate) from London Metropolitan University in 2013. He is a senior chartered engineer by the Portuguese Institution of Engineers with an MBA and specialist titles in Engineering and Industrial Management as well as in Metrology. He is also Eur Ing by FEANI-Brussels and Fellow (FIET) of IET-London.
Professor Geoffrey Mitchell studied in Sheffield and London before obtaining a Ph.D. working with Alan Windle at the University of Cambridge, UK. In 1984, he took up a lectureship in physics at the University of Reading, was appointed reader in Polymer Physics in 1992, and professor of Polymer Physics in 1995. In 2005, he was the founding director of the Centre for Advanced Microscopy at Reading which was university wide centre of excellence. He is now vice-director of CDRSP since 2014. Professor Mitchell has a broad experience of materials and engineering research ranging from non-linear optics through smart materials to the microstructural study of technologically important materials. He has developed novel time-resolving techniques in x-ray and neutron scattering for the study of both local structure and the influence of external fields (shear and extensional flow, stress, magnetic, electric) on polymer melts, glasses, liquid crystal polymers and crystallisable polymers.
