As healthcare challenges such as human aging and traffic accidents continue to increase exponentially, the biomedical sector faces a significant obstacle in arranging patient-specific biomedical products. Over the past two decades, additive manufacturing’s printing quality and ease of production have gained global attention, particularly in the development of scaffolds and implants.
This book explores additive manufacturing technologies and their categorization, materials, processing factors, output responses, advantages, challenges, and biomedical applications. It provides a critical analysis of past biomedical applications of additive manufacturing technology, explores recent advancements, and examines the design, applications, and characterizations of biomedical components using additive manufacturing techniques. Moreover, it discusses notable applications of additive fabrication in aerospace, education, and medicine, as it showcases the medical applications of rapid prototyping, addressing computational and experimental aspects of 3D-printed biomedical devices. Also, it provides future human implications and developments.
Advanced Manufacturing Technologies in Biomedical Science: Practical Applications, Case Studies, and Future Trends offers a unique framework for understanding and evaluating the latest advancements in biomedical additive manufacturing. This book targets individuals interested in conducting research, providing valuable insights, and can serve as an authoritative source of information for manufacturers and academic researchers in the business sector.

Dr. Manpreet Singh is Computational Research Scientist at the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF), Bethesda, Maryland, USA, in support of the Department of Defense Biotechnology High Performance Computing Software Applications Institute (DOD-BHSAI), Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC), United States Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), Fort Detrick, Maryland, USA. Dr. Singh received his PhD in mechanical engineering (thermo-fluids sciences specialization) from the University of Maryland. During his PhD, Dr. Singh worked on a National Science Foundation (NSF-1705538)-funded project titled "Mild Hyperthermia to Enhance Delivery of Therapeutic Nanocarriers in Tumors: Imaging, In Vivo Study, and Simulation." He is one of the few leading interdisciplinary experts in the fields of thermal engineering and mathematics and is well known for developing mathematical models of biological systems and medical devices to identify novel diagnostic and treatment strategies to improve the care available for chronic diseases, such as cancer and type-1 diabetes, and cold-related injuries, such as frostbite and loss of dexterity, hypothermia, and so on. Most importantly, Dr. Singh’s work in developing novel medical devices is exemplary, as the multi-orifice insulin delivery device that he developed is currently undergoing human clinical trials in the United States and Europe to obtain Food and Drug Administration 510K approval and CE Mark approval. His multi-hole cannula design being commercialized for insulin delivery demonstrates the impact of Dr. Singh’s work. Moreover, his open-source algorithm for magnetic coil design has been consistently adopted by other researchers to inform their own work. More recently, he has received early career recognition with the "AMMCS-2023 Kolmogorov-Wiener Young Researcher Award" at the VIth International Conference on Applied Mathematics, Modeling and Computational Science held at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, from August 14 to 18, 2023, for improving the prominent mathematical model (Pennes Bioheat Transfer Equation 1948) to predict temperature distribution in cancerous tissues. Dr. Singh has studied the heterogeneous blood perfusion using medical imaging at each pixel location to relax the uniform blood perfusion assumption. Additionally, Dr. Singh is a recipient of three more research awards during his doctoral degree program at the University of Maryland, including the "Dissertation Fellowship Award," "Student Researcher of the Quarter Award," and "Graduate Student of the Month Award," and three times "GSA Professional Development Grantee." Such awards hold higher recognition as these awards were received from an "R1" doctoral university, classified as Research Extensive or Very High Research Activity (VHRA) university under Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Recognition in the United States. Furthermore, Dr. Singh’s appointment as an academic editor for PLOS One, Guest Associate Editor for Frontiers in Thermal Engineering, Co-Guest Editor for Bioengineering and moreover, unsolicited invitations to review book proposals as a subject matter expert for Taylor & Francis Group, Judge for Senior Capstone Projects and International Conferences such as 10th American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineering Conference, Topic Coordinator for Specialized research topics, review invitations for international journals such as Case Studies in Thermal Engineering, Thermal Science and Engineering Progress, Heat and Mass Transfer, Frontiers in Oncology, and many more topical advisor positions for journals testify to his high stature in the field of computational heat and mass transfer and mathematics.
