Print on Demand. This book presents an inaugural address delivered to educators and leaders of the newly established Brighton Athenæum, an institution devoted to the moral and intellectual development of the city’s working-class population. The author asserts the critical importance of institutions such as this, particularly in a period marked by rapid technological and social change. He argues that all members of society should have equal opportunity to nurture their minds and spirits, and laments the widespread intellectual and artistic apathy he sees around him. The author calls for the provision of greater access to knowledge and educational opportunities for all, and for the pursuit of a higher moral purpose in the conduct of human affairs. This book will appeal to students of social history and educational theory, as well as to any reader interested in the power of education to transform lives and societies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Four of the following Addresses were deli vered to the members of an Institution, the character and objects of which are briefly described in a prefatory note, at page 1. The last was delivered to a different audi ence, and with a different design.
In submitting them, in their present shape, to public attention, the only desire has been to promote, if possible, in other quarters, the ends contemplated in their first delivery. On this account, some topics, to which the time allotted to an oral ad dress did not allow more than a brief allu sion, have been treated at greater length and, in two or three instances, the order of others has been transposed. With these exceptions, both the substance and form of the original have been retained.
