A vivid, thoughtful portrait of a life spent in law, learning, and public service. This collection of addresses and articles traces the wide reach of Frederic R. Coudert, a lawyer whose work touched courts, classrooms, and civic life. Readable and engaging, it reveals how one man’s curiosity and conviction shaped a career devoted to justice and the public good.
From early education in a family of steadfast political refugees to a lifelong dedication to learning, this edition highlights a scholar who refused to limit himself to legal practice. It shows how his writing, teaching, and public speeches reflected a broad interest in history, government, and moral duty. The volume also charts his active involvement in universities, historical societies, and civic clubs, illustrating how intellectual work can inform everyday citizenship.
- Insights into a jurist’s life and the belief that duty extends beyond the courtroom.
- Discussions of law, morality, and the relation between government and society.
- Reflections on education, universities, and the role of scholars in public life.
- Examples of public service, lectures, and the interplay between personal beliefs and civic action.
Ideal for readers of biographies of lawyers, American political history, and studies of 19th-century scholarship and public life.
