If, as has been the case in Glasgow, half-penny fares by tramcars and omnibuses are introduced, we shall doubtless see an enormous increase in the number of these vehicles and a greater crowding of our streets than can be easily realised.

Apart from suburban developments, it is to be observed with regard to the whole railway system of the country, that the great concession to third-class travellers inaugurated by the Midland Railway, under the enlightened advice of the late Sir James Allport, in consequence of which third-class carriages are attached to all trains, has caused an immense and even startling development of travelling throughout the whole country, and naturally the metropolis has experienced a large amount of that increase, attracting as it does visitors to itself in far larger numbers than formerly was possible, from all parts of the kingdom far outside the limits of Greater London.
