The speaker surveys the institution’s origins, its ties to the Dutch Reformed Church, and the long arc of growth that led to a modern college with a mission to prepare ministers, scholars, and leaders. By tracing key moments, leaders, and alumni contributions, the excerpt illuminates how a school’s legacy informs its responsibilities to students, the church, and the state.
- Understand the linking of a college’s history to its present mission and future goals.
- See how alumni engagement and philanthropy can fuel scholarships and endowment.
- Explore ideas for prize-driven merit and tuition support to encourage scholarly excellence.
- Gain a sense of the broader religious and national context that shaped Rutgers College.
Ideal for readers of institutional history, alumni perspectives, and the development of higher education in America, as well as those curious about the roots of Rutgers College and its long family of supporters.

Product Description
Dear Sim - Permit me, through you, to express to the Association my thanks for the very flattering terms in which they have been pleased to Speak of my address. Their kind expression I cannot but think was induced more by their own awakened interest in behalf of our Alma Mater, than by any thing in the address itself. I yield, however, to the wishes of my fellow Alumni; and if its circulation should extend the generous spirit of those who have requested its publication, its object will be accomplished.
For yourself personally, accept the assurance of my sincere regard.
