Print on Demand. This book centers on adding a relatively minor architectural function to the fetch-and-add instruction used in shared memory multiprocessors. The main goal is to provide a programmable interface between the memory and the network. This interface, referred to as the add-and-lambda processor, receives an address, an increment, and modifies the memory accordingly, returning the appropriate value to the network. By eliminating the need for busy-waiting in parallel operations, this book presents an alternative formulation of add-and-lambda operations, referred to as A&L2. A&L2 permits the possibility of eliminating busy waits in some cases. The author gives detailed examples of how A&L2 can be used to improve the efficiency of various parallel operations. Overall, this book offers valuable insights into enhancing the performance of shared memory multiprocessors through architectural modifications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
