Activate Your English focuses clearly on communication skills and learning strategies.

'This course ths is a very welcome addition to a gap which generally has previously been filled by publishing best-selling coursebooks in sections which might be more palatable and motivating on a short course ... I can thoroughly recommend Activate Your English to any teacher or course director looking for a book for adult intensive courses. In a refreshing format, it: practises grammar, vocabulary and elements of pronunciation in a highly communicative way; exposes students to varieties of accent; systematically develops learner strategies and sensitises them to cultural differences. This course leaves teachers and students with a sense of achievement and time well spent. I shall certainly be using it on future courses as it is the only book I have used where there has not been a single complaint from either student or teachers.' The Modern English Teacher, 1997

'Motivating intermediate learners and helping them feel a real sense of progress is notoriously difficult. This course would certainly seem to go some way towards achieving these aims.' The Journal, 1997

'This offers the broadest and most comprehensive learner training of the coursebooks analysed ... learner training is maintained consistently throughout.' ELT Journal, 1997 'An interesting part of the book is the - 'it is your choice' section where students can choose activities that they would like to do. I appreciated this part because this kind of activity makes students use their knowledge of English as a whole, they can experiment with different learning techniques, identify their personal needs and organise their learning.' 'If the authors claim that the aim of this course is to be a kind of short refresher course for adult learners who want to improve their English they have learnt but forgotten because of lack of active use then I think the aim is fulfilled. I like the way this course is organised. It is clear and understandable.' Independence 1998

'Activate Your English deserves success. It makes a definitive attempt to promote learner independence; it is certainly at the correct level for false beginners; and it adopts an adult approach. As a book for adults and about adults, it is likely to catch your student's attention.' ELT News

'The book is very strong on learner training: it treats the "students" as intelligent learners who have every right to know the aims of the activites they are asked to do ... The main strength of this book is the abundance of speaking activites based around the topics of the units. They provide the opportunity for a range of pair and group interactions that should do a lot to help improve the communicative abilities of most learners ... It certainly makes a real effort to address the needs of adults, particularly in the way it encourages the learners to play a proactive and self-aware role in the learning process.'
