Paperback. Set against the cold and turbulent backdrop of the 1982 Falklands War, Across Two Flags is a heart-wrenching tale of love, duty, and humanity amidst national hostility. The story follows John Taylor, a gentle English primary school teacher and amateur poet, who leaves his quiet life behind after being drafted into the Royal Marines. Sent thousands of miles away to the wind-swept Falkland Islands, John takes only a blank diary and a pen, unaware of the brutal reality awaiting him.On the opposing side is Isabella Rivera, a compassionate Argentine medical student who volunteers as a Red Cross field nurse to protect her vulnerable 19-year-old brother, Marco, who was conscripted into the army.Their paths cross in the chaos of battle when a severely wounded John is brought to Isabella's makeshift field hospital. Rising above national hatred, Isabella saves his life. Amidst the darkness of war, an unexpected and profound bond forms between the British soldier and the Argentine nurse. Learning about her brother, John promises Isabella that he will protect Marco if he ever encounters him on the battlefield-a promise he risks his life to keep during the bloody Battle of Goose Green. When the war ends and political borders force them apart, John and Isabella part ways at the Port Stanley docks with only a journal, a handkerchief, and a promise to remember each other. Across Two Flags is a powerful story showing that while flags and politics divide nations, human hearts remain forever connected. This item is printed on demand. About the Author
Edward Hale is a historical fiction author and storyteller dedicated to bringing the profound moments of world history to life through deeply emotional and character-driven narratives. With a passion for uncovering the human stories hidden beneath the weight of major global events, Hale weaves meticulous historical settings with poignant tales of survival, love, and resilience.
His works, including the acclaimed novel The Child Who Watched the World Disappear, explore how ordinary individuals-especially the young and the vulnerable-navigate the turbulent tides of history, from the scars of the Civil War to the tragic echoes of Hiroshima. Through his evocative prose and a belief that "creation is our true purpose even in times of destruction," Edward Hale aims to touch readers' hearts, preserve vital historical memories, and remind the world of the enduring strength of the human spirit.
