In June 1996, eighteen-year-old Angie Dodge was found murdered in her Idaho Falls apartment. The crime launched an investigation that would consume decades.
Police had something powerful almost immediately: male DNA recovered from the crime scene. What they did not have was a name.
Months later, investigators focused on Christopher Tapp, a young man who denied killing Angie and whose DNA did not match the biological evidence. After a prolonged series of interrogations, his story changed. He confessed. Prosecutors argued that the unidentified DNA belonged to another participant.
Tapp was convicted. The real source of the DNA remained free.
Across the Street reconstructs a disturbing wrongful-conviction and cold-case saga.
Readers are taken inside the interviews that transformed a denial into a confession, the courtroom where it helped secure a conviction, and the years in which DNA kept pointing away from the man in prison.
At the center was an extraordinary contradiction: Tapp had confessed, but the DNA was not his.
Appeals failed. Experts scrutinized the interrogation record. Angie Dodge's mother, Carol, examined the evidence and pushed for answers.
Then came a remarkable legal outcome. Tapp walked out of prison in 2017, but he was not yet exonerated of Angie Dodge's murder. The conviction remained. The unknown male DNA profile remained. The man who left that evidence was still unidentified.
Advances in DNA analysis and investigative genetic genealogy gave detectives a new path. Family trees narrowed the possibilities. A name emerged.
Then came the revelation that gives this book its title: the man linked to the crime-scene DNA had lived directly across the street from Angie Dodge.
He had even been contacted during the original neighborhood investigation.
More than two decades later, detectives tracked him down and waited for something that could provide his DNA. A discarded cigarette butt did.
The laboratory result transformed a genealogical lead into a direct forensic match. When investigators confronted the man with the evidence, his account changed. A mystery that had endured for twenty-three years began yielding answers.
How could the answer have been that close for so long?
Grounded in court records, law-enforcement documents, forensic evidence, legal filings, and recorded interviews, Across the Street follows Tapp's interrogation and conviction, the fight over the DNA, his release, the genealogy breakthrough, and the final legal reckoning.
What happens when a confession conflicts with physical evidence? How can investigators distinguish genuine admissions from statements shaped during repeated questioning? What happens when science refuses to support the story that sent a man to prison?
This is a story of murder, wrongful conviction, forensic DNA, interrogation, persistence, institutional failure, and a truth that survived long enough to be discovered.
Above all, it is the story of Angie Dodge, whose murder deserved the right answer from the beginning.
For readers of investigative true crime, wrongful-conviction cases, forensic mysteries, and cold cases solved through DNA, Across the Street reveals how one murder produced the wrong conviction, how science challenged that verdict, and how the real answer had been astonishingly close all along.
Discover the murder, the confession that did not fit, the innocent man who lost decades, and the forensic breakthrough that finally revealed who had been across the street.
