What if one of history’s most important migrations was written not in a single document, but across trade routes, oral traditions, inherited customs, language and DNA?
Across the Sahara follows the ancient roads linking North Africa, the Sahara, the Sahel and the kingdoms of West Africa. It investigates how Jewish and Israelite communities may have moved through these regions over many centuries—and how elements of covenant memory may have survived among African peoples long after the original journeys were forgotten.
Beginning with Africa’s place in the biblical world, Book Six explores:
• Ancient Jewish communities across North Africa
• The trans-Saharan trade routes that connected continents
• The desert kingdoms and trading centres of the Sahel
• Oral traditions among the Igbo, Ashanti, Yoruba and Lemba
• Cultural practices compared with biblical customs
• Genetic research concerning the Lemba and its limitations
• Proposed Hebrew connections in African languages
• The difference between documented history, oral tradition, cultural similarity and theological interpretation
The evidence is complex. Some connections are supported more strongly than others. Cultural parallels do not automatically establish ancestry, oral traditions must be examined alongside historical evidence, and genetics cannot assign a biblical tribe to a modern person.
Across the Sahara therefore invites readers to investigate rather than merely accept. It presents the migration routes, traditions and competing interpretations while asking an extraordinary question:
Could memories and descendants connected with ancient Israel’s dispersions have become part of the societies later drawn into the Atlantic world?
Written for readers of biblical history, African history, Jewish diaspora studies and covenant theology, this volume continues the journey begun in Chosen and Scattered while remaining accessible as a focused investigation in its own right.
The desert covered the footprints. The memories survived.
Book Six of the ten-volume Chosen and Scattered series.
