Item description from seller

HEWITT, Randall H. Across the Plains and Over the Divide. New York: Broadway Publishing Co., [1906]. iii, 521, [12, advts.]pp. 59 plates, folding map. Orig. pictorial cloth. With inscription from the author and his wife. Very good. Howes H-457, "aa." Soliday I:1099. Mintz 222. Eberstadt Modern Overlands 222. Tweney 89, 29. Smith 4393. Wagner-Camp 391 (note). Graff 1875. The third and much expanded edition of the narrative which first appeared in 1862 under the title, Notes by the Way, and one of the best of all Oregon Trail narratives. Most copies of the third edition contain only 58 plates; this copy has a 59th, facing p. 230 (see Howes). Hewitt's journey followed, for the most part, a hitherto unknown and dangerous route, from Dundee, Illinois, to St. Joe, then up to Council Bluffs, overland to Laramie, Fort Hall, up to Coeur d'Alene, Spokane Falls, Portland and Olympia. He kept a detailed diary, and this narrative is one of the few substantial accounts of an 1862 crossing. "[Hewitt] experienced most of the adventures and hardships of the overland pioneer - Indian raids, terrible desert crossings, buffaloes, grizzlies, etc. Part of the end of the journey was made on the Columbia River" - Soliday. Inscribed on the front flyleaf by Hewitt (1840-1916) and his wife Ellen (1840-1922) to a cousin. …
