Print on Demand. This adventurous narrative follows the author and his companion as they venture to walk from Shanghai to Burma across uncharted territory on foot, traversing over 2000 miles in China. Whilst the majority of foreigners merely observed events from the concessions of established trading ports, this daring expedition took the author through a China few Westerners had ever seen. Brimming with camaraderie, struggles, and humor, this historic book paints a picture of a country on the cusp of great change. The complex picture painted of day-to-day life in China gives an indispensable overview of the lives of ordinary people, their customs, and their history, at a time when China was beginning to modernize. The author's personal anecdotes and experiences, told with clarity and candor, make this a fast-paced and fascinating account of exploration and insight. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to learn about China's past, or understand its geopolitical significance in the world today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

To travel in China is easy. To walk across China, over roads 'acknowledgedly worse than are met with in any civilised country in the two hemispheres, and having accommodation unequalled for crudeness and insanitation, is not easy. In deciding to travel in China, I determined to cross overland from the head of the Yangtze Gorges to British Burma on foot; and, although the strain nearly cost me my life, no conveyance was used in any part of my journey other than at two points described in the course of the narrative. For several days during my travels I lay at the point of death. The arduousness of constant mountaineering - for such is ordinary travel in most parts of Western China - laid the foundation of a long illness, rendering it impossible for me to continue my walking, and as a consequence I resided in the interior of China during a period of convalescence of several months duration, at the end of which I continued my cross-country tramp. Subsequently I returned into Yun-nan from Burma, lived again in Tong-ch'uan-tu and Chao-t'ong-ia, and travelled in the wilds of the surrounding country. Whilst travelling I lived on Chinese food.
