Dan Brown beweert vooraan in de 'Da Vinci code', dat de Priorij van Sion een werkelijk bestaand geheim genootschap is, dat werd opgericht in 1099. Vervolgens vermeldt hij de 'Dossiers Secrets' waarin Leonardo da Vinci wordt voorgesteld als een gewezen grootmeester van de Priorij. De Priorij van Sion is echter een imaginair genootschap, ontsproten uit het brein van een Franse manipulator, die aan de hand van vervalste stambomen en valse documenten wou bewijzen dat hij afstamde van de Merovingers en aanspraak kon maken op de Franse troon (indien de monarchie zou hersteld worden). In dit boek maakt de auteur komaf met de mythe.
