An Account of the Trial, Behaviour, And Execution of Will.m Abbott for the Wilful Murder of Mary Lees, Alias Duggan, Or Long Poll. Who Was Executed at the Old Bailey, On Monday Last. [Hythe, Kent]: W. Tiffen, March 6, 1822. 14-1/2" x 9-1/2" broadside on thin paper, text in two columns below headline, columns and headline separated by rules, untrimmed edges. Light browning, faint spotting, a few minor folds and creases. $2,650. * Abbott and Lees were an unmarried couple who lived together in a boarding house in Bloomsbury, London. After "words arose between them" on February 7, 1822, due to a dispute over money, he beat her several times over the course of the evening. A "thin tall woman, and by no means strong," she was punched, kicked, thrown and, when prone, stomped. She died the next morning. Abbott was sober and, when confronted by other lodgers, expressed no remorse for his actions. He even quipped that he would sell her body to an anatomist. As fate would have it, Abbott was anatomized after his execution. Our broadside account by the important Kent printer William Tiffen [1785-1855] appears to be unrecorded.
