In Accidental First Lady, I share my 22-year journey as the political spouse and first lady of St. Petersburg, Florida, the state's 5th largest city. This memoir offers an insider's perspective on the evolution of local politics, revealing the resilience, faith, and tenacity required to navigate the public and private challenges of a political life.
Balancing my lawyer-turned-politician husband's demanding career, raising children, and surviving cancer, I discovered how to craft my own identity, separate from the "stand-by-your-man" persona. This story is one of quiet leadership, personal transformation, and finding my voice amidst the complexities of political life.
For readers interested in political memoirs, personal growth, and stories of overcoming adversity, Accidental First Lady provides an inspiring, behind-the-scenes look at the triumphs and tribulations of life in the political spotlight.
Early reviews:
"Kerry Kriseman has shared intimate, authentic details of her life in politics and the public spotlight across two decades in Florida politics. She makes clear how a modern 'political spouse' is anything but the stereotype of the adoring, 'stand by her man' mannequin wife but is instead a full partner in the decisions, the public fights, and private challenges of service in the modern era."
- Chris Coons, United States Senator, Delaware
"The book is charming, thoughtful, revealing, and poignant. It reveals the humanity behind the emotionally charged words and actions of the divisive political climate of the last few years. It is an emotionally and politically satisfying tour of recent St. Petersburg history."
- Kati Bumgardner, Vice President of Media & Operations, Counterpoint Messaging
"Kerry Kriseman's autobiography about her life as the spouse of a leading politician is honest and human and gracefully written. I read her new book in one sitting, and can't recommend it enough."
- Jeff Klinkenberg, former Tampa Bay Times columnist and author of five books about Florida culture.
"Stunning in its simple eloquence and honesty, this is a story about a woman who gives up everything to support her spouse's political career, without letting go of herself. Kerry rises to her unanticipated role page by page, steering a steady course thorugh public life and private losses. As she humbly and gratefully learns to become the author of her first lady life, she inspires us down our own unexpected paths, restoring our faith in each other and in ourselves."
- Stacy Clark, Founder, Tiny Type Studios
