Modern readers of the Bible are time-travellers visiting a society and culture very different from their own. Strange customs, unfamiliar words, and novel concepts encountered in the Bible's pages can make understanding the Word of God a real challenge. The Access Bible is the ideal companion for people who have never previously studied the Scriptures in detail. It is based on the latest scholarship, and uses the acclaimed NRSV text, but it takes an important extra step forward. It has been written and edited with great care so that those who are new to Bible study can simply pick it up and start reading with understanding. A unique feature of The Access Bible is the running commentary that is interspersed throughout the Bible text. Difficult concepts are clearly explained in terms that are easily understood by everyday readers. When a technical explanation is required, a unique start symbol directs the reader to a concise glossary that follows the Bible text. History, social contexts, religious practices, the beliefs of ancient peoples - all are explained when the Bible text requires it. This is an ecumenical project designed to meet the needs of readers from a wide variety of backgrounds. The inclusion of the books of the Apocrypha will enhance its value for readers from a Catholic or Anglican background. The Access Bible sets new standards for ease of understanding. It is a key companion for life's spiritual journey. …
