Print on Demand. This book presents a collection of abstracts from inquisitiones post mortem, fascinating legal records that provide genealogical and topographical insights into London during the reign of King Henry VII. From 1485 to 1509, these inquisitions document property ownership, feudal obligations, and family lineage of individuals who died holding land from the Crown. The inquests offer a rare glimpse into the lives and possessions of London's medieval inhabitants and reveal the intricate social and economic landscape of the city at that time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

In pursuance of the direction contained in the writ, the escheator or feodary summoned a jury of the county, who accordingly rendered their verdict upon their oath; this was engrossed upon parchment, and in due course delivered up into the Court of Chancery, and there duly filed. In the course of the inquest the dealings that the deceased had had with his property came under review, and this necessitated inquiries into family settlements and trusts affecting it, and consequently we often find such documents, including the deceased's will, are recited at length, thus affording us information of the highest value to the genealogist.
