Like other prolific authors , suffered the envy and was considered the stylistic rival Hemingway ( his long sentences contrasted with short Hemingway ) . It is considered the only likely American modernist of the 1930s , following the experimental tradition of European writers such as James Joyce , Virginia Woolf and Marcel Proust, and known for its use of innovative literary techniques such as interior monologue , the inclusion of multiple narrators or views and jumps in time within the narrative .
