Originally published in 1957, and reprinted in 1959, this is the completely revised second edition from 1965. Illustrated with eight pages of photographic plates, and line drawings also within the text. ***A good copy in illustrated card wrappers - would be very good but for a loose page (p217/8) which has become detached in the past, possibly even during production, but is still present. Covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling. Edges of wrappers slightly rubbed and creased. No reading creases to the spine. No tears. No inscriptions. Internal pages clean although the paper is lightly tanned. ***296 pages plus a six page publisher's catalogue at the rear. 182mm x 112mm. ***'With the developments of nuclear energy and weapons the subject of radiation biology has come to the forefront of public attention since the hazards of radiation are a problem of national importance for both peace and war. In the long run the survival of modern civilization will depend on the successful exploitation of atomic power and this must be achieved without endangering the health of present or future generations. This book puts the reader into possession of the facts that are available and indicates the great gaps in our knowledge which are responsible for making this subject one of controversy. It aims to tell the story of how a minute amount of energy in the form of atomic radiation can alter the life of individual cells and whole animals, how it can cure and yet cause cancer, and how it affects the genetic mechanism thereby producing changes which will become apparent in later generations.' [Quote from back cover] ***A first impression of the second UK edition of this book - a paperback original, published during the height of the Cold War. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
