Pamphlet (5 5/8" x 9 1/4"). 64pp. Sewn as issued with printed papers wrappers. Woodcut of a "Cholera Scene" on rear wrapper. Front wrapper has the imprint: New-York: E. Hutchinson, 1849. This is a popular survey of the state of knowledge about cholera in the 1840's. It also includes a history of outbreaks of the disease both within the United States and internationally. The author is candid about understanding the causes of cholera, admitting that the causes are "unknown to us. " However, he also reports "that is in the atmosphere we have every reason to believe. . . " Medical remedies recommended by doctors were equally misguided as they included bleeding, dry friction and opium, among with others. Some chips to the spine and few spots and nicks to the printed wrappers. Text is largely clean; although a few pages are either tanned or have occasional spotting that does not affect text. Overall, a good + copy of a fragile and scarce item.This is a scarce title. Woldcat locates only one copy in US libraries. Seller Inventory # 48453
