About this Item
Hand-coloured wood engraving, 5.5 x 9.5 inches, framed and glazed in conservation materials. Overall size 10 x 14 inches. Inspired by the successes of the Great Exhibition and the National Art Treasures Exhibition held in Manchester, the Folkestone Art Treasures Exhibition Company created this purpose-built exhibition hall surrounded by pleasure gardens. The public response being less than anticipated, the venture closed after 150 days, recording losses of some £27,000. Two years later the building was converted into the 1,000-seater Pleasure Gardens Theatre, which operated until the early 1960s. It was demolished in 1964, replaced by an insurance company building, and now houses the Kent Police HQ. Seller Inventory # 22496
