Cornet has published an important volume on the art of the Zairian people. This time the rites, dances, symbols and masks of the Kuba are studied, as are the magnificent carved figures of the Royal Kuba. 115 of these mid-17th to late- 19th century figures appear in photographs, and in the text (in French) Fr. Cornet deals with his new theories regarding the identification of these great objects. The bulk of the color photographs--mainly full-page and of wonderful quality--were taken in the field. Major sections of this publication deal with the royal figures, Kuba costume and jewelry, masks and dances, design motifs on wood objects, and royal objects and royal funeral rituals.
