FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9.5 x 6.75 inches. 96 pp. letterpress + plates. Rebound in maroon morocco over marbled boards, gilt; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt with contrasting green morocco title labels, gilt. A little margin damp stain on title and preceding endpaper. Small lower corner worming at foot of title and to page 12 with a few small edge spots; otherwise a very good copy with clean plates. Faint early inscription on verso of third free endpaper. Illustrated by chromolithograph decorated title and by 95 chromolithographic plates. A few plate captions faded as usual. Decorated by initial and head and tailpiece vignettes. A fine collection of illuminated work from 600-1600, the images reproduced by William Robert Tymms (1828-78), talented chromolithograph designer. The text is by Sir Matthew Wyatt (1820-1877), prominent architect of the period. He served as Secretary to the Great Exhibition of 1851 and as Surveyor of the East India Company and published The Industrial Arts of the Nineteenth Century in 1851. A condensed version (1861) and a second edition of The Art of Illuminating soon followed, all published by the notable lithographers, Day and Son. A scarce title recently handsomely rebound.
