The most thorough description of the Confederate Secret Service to date, "April '65" provides previously unknown records and traces the development of Confederate doctrine for the conduct of irregular warfare. In addition, it describes Confederate operations such as developing a peace party in the North, details on how the Confederates planned to attack the military command and control in Washington, and how they responded to the situation when the wartime attack evolved into a peacetime assassination of Lincoln. It also gives new information on how the Confederates were successful in influencing the history of the assassination. Included are photographs, illustrations, appendices (a table of request for Secret Service money, "Organization of Private Warfare" by B.J. Sage, and the bill to establish a Bureau for Special and Secret Service), endnotes, a bibliography, and an index. This copy is clean and solid.
