A practical exploration of work, judgment, responsibility, and future ethics in an age of increasingly capable machines.
The first edition of this book named seven human capabilities, called them irreplaceable, and told you to build your career behind them.
The walls did not hold.
Systems learned to do more of what the author had called safely human, and they will learn more still. So this revised and expanded edition does what the book asks its readers to do: it looks at what actually happened, and corrects the claim where the claim was made.
Here is what the last two years taught, and it is better news than the original promise.
The danger was never that machines would replace you. It is quieter than that. Plausible answers have become nearly free, they arrive looking finished, and much in working life now rewards letting the first plausible answer become the last word. What has grown scarce is not human capability. It is the willingness to test consequential work against something that can change it, and to answer for what follows.
Being AI-proof is not a moat around a human skill. It is a way of working.
This edition is substantially new:
• Fifteen chapters, rebuilt from the ground up, replacing the original's boundary map with an argument that does not depend on predicting where machine capability stops
• Evidence from more than forty verified sources, including findings that cut against the book's own argument
• Documented public cases sitting beside clearly labeled composites, so you can check the record yourself
• A new chapter on what quietly stops being exercised when capable systems make exercising it optional
Learn these systems. Use them for everything they are good at. Direct them well, verify them properly, and govern how they enter your work.
Then keep exercising whatever you must remain able to judge.
Capability is moving. Responsibility remains.
For the professional entering the workforce, the one midway through a career being repriced, and the leader whose decisions shape how everybody else acquires judgment.
