AFRICAN BUFFALO HANDBOOK is a comprehensive practical guide to understanding African buffalo biology, behavior, habitat requirements, nutrition, health, herd dynamics, breeding, safety, and responsible stewardship. Written for wildlife professionals, private reserve managers, conservation-minded readers, students, and individuals seeking reliable knowledge about managed African buffalo, this book combines essential principles with practical management guidance.
Raphael Hartley takes readers beyond basic species information to explore how African buffalo live, communicate, establish social relationships, respond to their environment, reproduce, and interact within complex herds. Special attention is given to the realities of managing a large, powerful wild animal that requires appropriate facilities, professional veterinary support, secure containment, and careful risk management.
Inside this handbook, you’ll discover:
• African buffalo origins, biology, physical characteristics, natural history, and adaptations
• Understanding temperament, social behavior, herd hierarchy, communication, and natural instincts
• How habitat, space, vegetation, shade, water, and environmental conditions influence welfare
• Principles of secure fencing, enclosure planning, gates, handling facilities, and escape prevention
• Nutritional requirements and practical approaches to grazing, forage management, supplementation, and seasonal feeding
• Water management, sanitation, observation routines, and everyday herd monitoring
• How to assess body condition, appetite, movement, behavior, and other indicators of health and welfare
• Preventive health management, veterinary planning, parasite control, biosecurity, and disease surveillance
• Recognition of injuries, illness, abnormal behavior, and situations requiring professional veterinary intervention
• Safe management practices for minimizing risks to handlers, visitors, veterinarians, and the animals themselves
• Herd formation, introductions, social conflict, population management, and maintaining appropriate group structures
• Breeding management, reproductive behavior, pregnancy, calving, maternal care, and calf development
• Seasonal management and preparation for drought, extreme weather, emergencies, infrastructure failure, and other challenges
• Record keeping, identification, health documentation, reproductive records, transfers, and long-term herd planning
• Ethical acquisition, legal responsibilities, conservation considerations, responsible transfer, and lifelong stewardship
Safety remains central throughout the book. African buffalo are not domesticated cattle and should never be treated as ordinary livestock. Their strength, defensive behavior, social dynamics, and potential unpredictability require specialized facilities, experienced personnel, appropriate legal authorization, and professional support. This handbook emphasizes observation and low-stress management rather than unnecessary direct contact.
AFRICAN BUFFALO HANDBOOK also explores the larger responsibility associated with keeping or managing wildlife. Good stewardship involves protecting animal welfare while considering conservation, disease management, environmental sustainability, human safety, and the ecological consequences of management decisions.
Whether you are studying African buffalo, working with wildlife, developing your knowledge of herd management, or seeking a detailed reference on responsible stewardship, this handbook provides a strong foundation for understanding these remarkable animals.
Learn their behavior. Respect their power. Protect their welfare. Manage responsibly.
