About this Item
A large copper plate measuring 15x12 inches, electroplated on one side. Contained in a recent blue cloth drop back box with a leather lettering label. THE ORIGINAL MEZZOTINT COPPER PLATE engraved by Burgess after John Hoppner's great portrait commissioned 1802. Copper plate was made circa 1839 and the engraving was published by H. G. Bohn 12th November 1839. Electroplating was invented in 1805 by Luigi V. Brugnatelli and was used to increase the durability of the copper. Some signs of tarnishing. A most unusual piece of original art work. ADMIRAL LORD VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805). William Oakley Burgess (1816- 1844) was an English mezzotint engraver. John Hoppner RA (1758 1810) was an English portrait painter, much influenced by Reynolds. The original painting was painted for George IV then Prince of Wales, although not received until after Hoppner's death in 1810. Seller Inventory # 6353
