It is a disease that affects not only the body's ability to produce healthy blood cells but also the overall metabolic and nutritional balance of the patient. The journey through AML treatment-encompassing chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or stem cell transplantation-places immense physiological and emotional demands on the body. Amidst these challenges, nutrition emerges as a critical pillar of care, directly influencing treatment tolerance, recovery, and quality of life.A well-structured AML diet is not merely about sustenance; it is a strategic tool that helps patients navigate the side effects of treatment, bolster immunity, and support hematopoietic function. Chemotherapy, for instance, can cause nausea, vomiting, mucositis, taste alterations, and significant fluctuations in appetite. These symptoms often lead to weight loss, nutrient deficiencies, and a decline in energy, making proper nutritional intervention essential. Beyond symptom management, the right dietary approach can help maintain lean body mass, stabilize blood sugar levels, and promote optimal gastrointestinal health-all of which are vital for patients undergoing aggressive therapies. The principles of an AML diet extend beyond caloric intake. They emphasize high-quality proteins to support tissue repair and immune function, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats for sustained energy, and a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to assist in cellular recovery and protect against oxidative stress. Hydration also plays a crucial role, particularly in preventing complications such as constipation, urinary tract infections, and kidney strain during treatment. Moreover, food safety is a central concern for AML patients due to neutropenia, a condition characterized by low white blood cell counts that increases susceptibility to infections. Safe food handling, proper storage, and selection of low-risk foods are essential components of dietary planning.Nutrition in AML is inherently individualized. Factors such as age, weight, disease stage, treatment regimen, preexisting health conditions, and treatment-related side effects all influence dietary recommendations. Collaboration with a registered dietitian, particularly one specializing in oncology nutrition, ensures that the diet not only meets basic nutritional needs but also aligns with therapeutic goals. This tailored approach allows patients to optimize energy, manage side effects, and potentially improve clinical outcomes. This book takes a comprehensive look at the AML diet, offering evidence-based guidance, practical meal plans, and symptom-specific strategies. It aims to empower patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals with actionable knowledge to navigate the nutritional challenges of AML confidently. By integrating sound dietary practices into the overall treatment plan, patients can strengthen their resilience, improve tolerance to therapy, and foster a sense of control during a period that can often feel overwhelming. In the following chapters, you will find step-by-step guidance on designing meals that are not only nutrient-dense but also palatable, safe, and adaptable to the dynamic needs of AML patients. From managing treatment-induced nausea to optimizing immune support and maintaining muscle mass, every aspect of nutrition will be addressed to help patients meet the unique challenges posed by Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
