The Life of Dave as Told by Himself presents the complete text of Frank E. Butler's 1923 newspaper article from the Newark Sunday Call, recounting the remarkable life of Dave, the dog who became known throughout the country as Annie Oakley’s loyal companion and celebrated Red Cross dog. Beloved by Annie and Frank and admired by audiences nationwide, Dave was more than a performing dog — he was a symbol of devotion, intelligence, and service during a time when such stories captured the public imagination.
This edition restores Butler’s original newspaper article in full and includes an editorial comparison with the privately printed booklet version, highlighting the differences between the two texts. To provide broader historical context, the volume also incorporates additional period newspaper accounts related to Dave’s death and to the time Annie Oakley, Frank Butler, and their dogs spent in Florida. These materials illuminate the world in which Dave lived and the deep bond he shared with Annie Oakley.

About the Authors
Frank E. Butler (1852-1926) was an Irish-born American marksman, vaudeville performer, and the longtime professional partner and husband of Annie Oakley. A skilled sharpshooter and showman, he toured widely in Wild West exhibitions and theatrical productions. Butler also authored "The Life of Dave: As Told by Himself" in 1923, a brief narrative about the couple's beloved dog, Dave, from the dog's perspective, taking his life from the kennel to his final day in 1923.
Carl Plesner is an editor with an interest in local history and the preservation of historical texts. He works with his wife, Cynthia, to prepare revised and accessible editions of older books and articles, including family projects such as his father-in-law's published work and other public domain and other works.
