Imagine living in constant fear that a single bite of food could trigger a life-threatening allergic reaction in your child. For millions of families, that has been the disheartening reality of food allergy.
For Dr. Dale Umetsu, that wasn’t enough.
In Beyond Avoidance: A Physician’s Pursuit to Transform Food Allergy Therapy, Dr. Umetsu traces his decades-long effort to change the way food allergy is treated. With candor and insight, he describes the scientific discoveries, clinical setbacks, and regulatory battles that accompanied the journey toward effective therapy. From academic laboratories to pharmaceutical development and FDA negotiations, he reveals the perseverance required to advance a promising idea into an approved treatment.
Both informative and deeply personal, Beyond Avoidance provides a rare insider’s account of the breakthroughs that helped usher in a new era of food allergy treatment. It is the story of one physician’s determination to move beyond avoidance and help change the field forever.
