Synopsis

In Asteriane, magic is inherited, and only the great Houses inherit it. Marriages are contracts. Bloodlines are law. And the truth is only safe when the court permits it to be remembered.

Caelan Vey has spent eighteen years as the ward of a minor provincial House, useful enough to keep, baseborn enough to discard. Summoned to the capital for marriage season, he expects the usual currency of court: polished insults, strategic courtships, a future bargained away for someone else's gain.

Instead, Lys Maren recognizes him.

Oaths fracture when he hears them spoken. Sealed rooms murmur his name before anyone has offered it. Bloodline glass clouds and fails at his touch, and every great House begins to wonder whether the quiet ward from the provinces is a tool to be used, a threat to be removed, or a prize to be won.

As the court closes around him, Caelan finds uneasy allies among the people power prefers to forget: a memory-archivist noblewoman whose help could cost her everything, a sharp-eyed widow, a servant of the oath courts. Together they trace the fragments of a buried royal vow toward a secret the realm has spent twenty years unmaking.

But in Lys Maren, to be recognized is not to be rescued. It is to be claimed.

And if Caelan speaks the truth waiting in his blood, he will do more than unseat a succession. He will crack the lie beneath the magic of every House in Asteriane.
